For centuries, the deep bond between Buddhist laity and monastics has been at the heart of Myanmar’s spiritual and social fabric. Lay supporters provide material offerings of requisites through alms and donations, while monks and nuns, in turn, preserve and share the spiritual teachings of the Buddha. This symbiotic relationship has endured through countless generations, symbolizing the collective effort to uphold the Buddha’s Sāsana in the Golden Land. However, since the 2021 military coup, Myanmar’s economic collapse has severely impacted this tradition. With many laypeople struggling to meet just their own basic needs, their ability to offer alms has been severely impacted, forcing some monasteries to stop alms rounds altogether, in some cases for the first time in history! To address this urgent crisis, we have launched The Alms Rounds Program, allowing foreign donors to directly support monks, nuns, and novices across the country. Through this initiative, we will: -Provide nourishing meals such as rice, curries, and essential food items -Support local almsgiving charities that have struggled to continue their century-old traditions due to economic hardship This program is a direct response to the growing food insecurity within monastic communities, ensuring that monks, nuns, and novices receive the sustenance they depend on. Your donation will go towards keeping this sacred tradition alive, easing the burden on local communities, and sustaining Myanmar’s monastic institutions in their time of greatest need.
